The spirit behind the Thanksgiving holiday (late November in the USA) is one of “giving thanks” for all the gifts and joys we have in our lives, no matter how small or big, sparse or abundant.

There are many ways to express gratitude. In some cultures, gratitude and respect is shown through the hands coming into a prayer. In other cultures, you would bow, or curtsy. Handshakes, prostrations, giving gifts, these are some of the many ways we can show appreciation.

Surya Namaskar (the Sun Salutation) is a perfect example of how to display gratitude through our bodies: stretch the heart open, then bow deeply, go to the floor to repeat a similar lift of the heart and bow, then repeat until your body feels warm, and your mind settles.

Along with Surya Namaskar this week, we’ll focus on various displays of gratitude and thanks, and end with a few postures to stimulate our digestion, so that we’ll be ready for the Thanksgiving holiday, when we fill our hearts with gratitude, and our bellies with nourishment.
