Deeper Description

A while back, Unnata course leader, Becky Stella, taught a fitness class called “Mermaids and Waffles: Ab Workout.” I hate fitness classes, don’t feel I need to do a full hour on just my abs, and can’t remember the last time I had the desire to eat a waffle. BUT, my initial reaction to the announcement was, “Hell, yeah! I’m taking that class.” Why? Because it sounded creative and fun. (Which, it was, by the way.)

I may not own a mermaid costume, but I have always found water and swimming images work well for students when they use the hammock. When we’re in water, even those who are the most awkward find a lightness and grace. When water envelops us, its resistance to our movements also makes us slow down a bit more. And let’s face it, when swimming, one has to be very conscious of deliberate breathing. Swimming, and the idea of swimming, is a great compliment to one’s yoga practice.

In this class, I’ll guide us through some flow-y movements and several lateral stretches (think of how a fish swims) as we use the hammock to help us gracefully release tension.

Highlights will include: Fish Pose (of course!), Whirlpool, Seaweed, and some really awesome ways of doing Pigeon and Cobra (Hey, snakes have a single tail, too, just like mermaids!)
