Enhanced Yoga

Deeper Description

When I first started teaching yoga with hammocks, I received mixed responses from my yoga teacher colleagues. Some thought it was a fun idea, some were indifferent, some thought it was an affront to traditional yoga, etc. As many minds as there are out there, they each had a different opinion.

I remember during that time, Dharma Mittra’s studio started advertising, “The Asanas are perfect just as they are.” I doubt that statement was aimed directly at me, and probably was unrelated to aerial yoga, but it still did give me pause. I asked myself, “Am I just creating one big distraction away from the yogic goal of self-realization?”

Because I had this doubt, I’ve always been careful to ensure everything I do with the hammock serves two purposes – one for the mind and body to enjoy, and one to further us along on our journey towards yoga. Or at least, not to distract away from Hatha Yoga’s ultimate goal. My aim is to enhance the classic asanas, not replace them.

It’s been an awkward journey thus far, especially as more and more people jumped into teaching and training aerial yoga. As many minds as there are out there, each has a different definition and approach to aerial yoga.

In this class, I remember my mantra, “enhance, don’t replace.” I use the hammock to uplift our practice, while closely following a traditional yoga sequence, so that we can have fun and be playful while simultaneously focusing on the serious pursuit of a settled mind.

“Fun” parts of the class will include: Handstand, Plow, a Forward Flip while inside the Hammock (trust me, this is not what you’re thinking). And, we’ll settle the mind with every breath that brings focus inward.
